Secret Gardens of Santa Fe
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (October, 1997)
Authors: Sydney Leblanc and Charles Mann
Average review score:

The Secret Gardens of Santa Fe is a stunning portrayal..
The photographs, in The Secret Gardens of Santa Fe, offer a glympse of a very special place in the western states. Sydney Leblanc does a fine--brief--job descibing the history of Santa Fe, and the reasons the gardens of this unique area do so well. Charles Mann has the touch when it comes to photography. He captures the mystery, the spectacular colors and design, and the fabulous art that adorns many of the gardens. A terrific book that makes one want to visit New Mexico, and see for one's self the magic of the high desert.

Authors: Elizabeth Ferrer and American Federation Of Arts
Average review score:

wonderful for everyone interested in fine art photography
this book gives a remarkable crosssection of the alternatives for fine art that photography holds. excellent examples from straight documentary photography to mixed media collages incorperating found photographs. the book is also put together in a remarkable manner with each well written essay first written in spanish and then in english. essays are informative as introductions to the artist being reviewed and to their ideas and the culture that helped form the. the introduction of the book sort of traced the history and progression of photography as an art in mexico and any one interested in photography or culture should find it fascinating.

Sheriff William Brady, Tragic Hero of the Lincoln County War
Published in Paperback by Sunstone Press (July, 1997)
Authors: Donald R. Lavash and Robert M. Utley
Average review score:

Great
This book is a must for any Billy The Kid, or Lincoln Co. War buff. Mr. Lavish gets to the point, and backs up what he says. It is very different than your average run of the mill book on the Lincoln County War, and gives a very different view. If this subject is where your interest is, then this is a MUST READ BOOK.

Sibley's New Mexico Campaign
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (October, 2000)
Authors: Martin Hardwick Hall and Jerry Thompson
Average review score:

Sergio Leone based his film on this Civil War Campaign
General Sibley was in charge of the Confederate Army that invaded New Mexico in 1862. This book is very informative and is very good reading from the same author of Sibley's biography. General Sibley drank a bit! On the field he actually won the battle, but being pre-occupied he stretched his forces too thin and got his supplies severed. He eventually lost the campaign. If he had been sober he had a good chance of real victory. The battle, which took place between Confederate and Union forces at Glorietta Pass, has the distinction of the Civil War battle fought at the highest altitude. This bit of Civil War history never makes it into the books. In "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" directed by Sergio Leone and featuring Clint Eastwood this is the Civil War campaign that the film is based around. General Sibley's name is mentioned in the film.

Sin Nombre : Hispana and Hispano Artists of the New Deal Era
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (October, 2001)
Author: Tey Marianna Nunn
Average review score:

Must read for all who love the art of the SouthWest.
A few years ago, a brilliant and talented student found a gap in the recent art history of New Mexico. She went out and conducted the research, raised the money, wrote the PhD thesis, and then was curator for an exhibit at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe that identified and saluted the artists whose names had been lost in the dusty archives of our Great Depression and the resulting New Deal. The exhibit changed the lives of the artists still living and assured artistic credit for those who are no longer with us. How many of the thousands of PhD theses produced since Dr. Nunn wrote hers have had any impact, let alone a major impact on the lives of people? This beautiful book is climax to Dr. Nunn's efforts.

Most people will never have the opportunity to be charmed and enlightened by a Dr. Nunn lecture. This book is a wonderful introduction to what a committed individual can do to make modern art history come alive. It is also a very useful introduction to the art of New Mexico created by the true artists of New Mexico, not the visitors (temporary or permanent) from other parts of the country. The Hispana and Hispano artists of the New Deal look straight at us from the pages of this book not for our approval but with pride in the art that they have created. Fortunately for us, Dr. Nunn, the Museum, and the University of Mexico Press have taken the time to reproduce this art to let us share in their joy of creation.

Long overdue! The definitive work on the subject.

Make the red tape go away!
This book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to start just about any kind of small business. I understand there are several states in the series. These books have region-specific information about zoning, laws, conacts, and permits. Also a comprehensive phone and address list is included. This book takes care of you step by step in starting your business, and keeps you from having to talk to the wrong people or wait in the wrong line.

So All Is Not Lost: The Poetics of Print in Nuevomxicano Communities, 1834-1958 (Paso Por Aqui Series on the Nuevomexicano Literary Heritage)
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (May, 1997)
Author: A. Gabriel Melendez
Average review score:

A thorough historical review of early Spanish language press
Not only does this book provide a complete historical perspective, it also highlights (through quotes and themes) the social issues facing early Hispano-American settlers. Ironically, these issues continue to have present-day relevance to those impacted by cultural and societal differences.

So Far from Heaven
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (September, 1973)
Author: Richard Bradford
Average review score:

A rare gem...
This book came to me by way of my grandmother. It is one of my most prized possessions. It follows a period in the life of a burned-out executive who finds what he's been looking for -- even though he didn't know he was seeking it. If you can get a hold of a copy, be sure to read this book. It encompasses the passion and staunch traditions of New Mexico -- a state that hasn't quite lost it's edge when it comes to family, hearth and home.
